2026 Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming appears particularly powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year so far.

When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we might just be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
